Thorsten Streichardt - Salzburger Fusseln

PAUL HOGARTH - Defiant People, Drawings of Greece Today, 1953
A disciple of British socialist artist James Boswell, Arthur Boyd Houghton’s biographer and an early explorer in the field of drawn reportage („The Artist as Reporter“, London 1967), Paul Hogarth became known as the most prolific graphic documentarist of the Cold War era.
„Defiant People“, the first  sketchbook he published, deals with  the post-war situation in Greece. Its central part  is a rendition of the trial of Tony Ambatielos, a communist  trade union leader, who was facing execution by the US-supported military regime of Marshal Papagos.
Hogarth’s early publications were widely spread behind the „Iron Curtain“. The MePri Collection holds a fascinating Chinese version.

World War I : Flanders I
Company 1/134, Monogrammist R.D.

This series of 19 gouaches from the collection of the MePri comes from the disbanded archival inventories of the "Vogtländischer Anzeiger", a German newspaper dating back to the last turn of the century. It very vividly depicts everyday  in the trenches as experienced by a German unit positioned in West Flanders between 1914-16. Interestingly, there is no trace in this image sequence that might tell of the novel perfidiousness of warfare introduced in April 1915 with the first extensive use the Germans made of toxic gas in the Belgian warzone.
